Donner Party Kitchen Staff -- Cookin' up something different...
Fixed?

I think I fixed the overheating issue on the secondary laptop, the one that is supposed to be running the truck cam. Opened it up and cleaned a lot of dust out & modified a few of the bottom vents for better air flow. Now I'm going to see if I can run the new Digi-Watcher software on it and not have it cook. That way the primary laptop can do it's job, navigation, without getting bogged down.

I'm still on a search & destroy mission for sources of electronic noise in this truck. The power connections are quiet, the radio goes virtually silent when I switch to the unused antenna port. I shut off the engine, inverter, everything the other day, was still getting S6-S7 constant background static on 75 meters. Last night I was tuning around on 75m and could barely hear anybody over the hiss. I had the stereo on, but turned all the way down. I reached over and turned off the XM receiver. The static instantly dropped from S6-S7 to S3-S4! :D Noisy little....grumble..grumble...grumble...

After killing the XM, I could hear people all over the place! 8) Of course, by then it was dawn, the D-layer was charging up & the band was going flat. :(

I wounder what would happen if I pulled the fuse on the Qualcomm? (other than getting fired...)

I'm trying out some new software for the camera. It will update the image as fast as the connection speed will allow. 8)8)

I know I have some email I should reply to, gotta give me a few days, they've been keeping us super busy. That means lots of money!:mrgreen: Tonight is the first chance we've had to stop for a shower in a week. I know, TMI...

Fan Club

I don't consider myself a 'fan' of very many musicians. There are a few exceptions, Genesis, Jars of Clay, Alan Jackson, Jethro Tull, Don Williams. These are people & groups who I have enough respect for to buy their new release 'sight-unseen', knowing from past experience that I will enjoy their new work.

Add the group Daughtry to that short list. Wow! I just can't stop playing their CD. Chris Daughtry is rock music's equivalent to Alan Jackson. Nothing fake to be found. Just an artist who is gifted in getting his point across.

I am not willing nor able to tolerate 'posers', somebody who is putting up a front for effect. Daughtry doesn't do this. If you value the real thing and also like guitar-heavy rock music, I very highly recommend Daughtry.

Also, he is a Christian, his songs are clean. You can let your kids listen.

It wasn't easy, but I found a website where I could order the fake bullet hole stickers I had on 5306. 6718 is now (fake) shot up with 38 caliber bullet holes! 8) You know, it's kinda cool to see a mini-van full of kids drive by pointing & laughing. :P8):P

Joined in on a QSO (contact) last night while I was driving through Nebraska between Florida, Washington, and Tennessee on 80 meters. If I'm not in a QSO on another frequency, I'll be monitoring 3838 kHz.

Got a message on the Qualcomm yesterday saying that my dispatcher, Jake, was 'no longer with the company' Didn't say why. Bummer. Jake was a good dispatcher and a stand up guy. I really enjoyed working with him.

My new dispatcher is Kate. She's been with CRST 7 years. I called her up today to say hi, she seems pretty cool. I think we share the smart-alec attitude.

The blog's been a little slow, it's been a long week. In the game Yahtzee you put 5 dice in a cup, shake it up & dump them out. That's what the inside of my truck looked like when I got to the yard Sunday night.

At first I thought I'd been robbed  until I realized all my stuff was still in the truck.

CRST's policy is to open a truck for reassignment if the drivers are off for more than 7 days. The machanics take everything out and 'greensheet' (clean, inspect & repair) the truck so it will be ready for new drivers.

They even trashed the old lower bunk mattress. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a 36 x 80 innerspring mattress in through the door of a truck & into the sleeper?

Apparently they started Friday and either quit when they saw what they were up against, or ran out of time. That was a good thing. If they had uninstalled all my gear and put it in a box, I'd be driving for a different company today.

:evil: NOT very happy about this.:evil:

I had planned to set up my radios, get a good nights sleep, and be ready to go Monday morning. Instead, I worked all night putting things back together. I'm still not done.

Just had my first HF (actually MF)QSO (on-air conversation) with Dan WB6FWS.

This is the configuration for my mobile station for now. My Kenwood TM-D700A is mounted on the left. My brand new Kenwood TS-480HX is on the right. In the middle is a Keyspan 4 port serial-to-USB adaptor. On top you can see the power cable. Top middle is an antenna switch to easily allow me to physically disconnect the antenna when not in use. Hitting a sign, light fixture, or low-hanging wire is a real possibility in this installation. Bottom middle is a 7-port USB hub. Bottom right is a RigBlaster for HF digital modes. Bottom left is the major ground connection, 16 18 gauge wires going to a single point on the chassis. Skin effect makes multiple small conductors better at RF (Radio Frequency) than one large conductor. The whole setup is designed to be quickly & cleanly removed from the truck. Everything must be firmly tied down to avoid problems from vibration. That's also why I used rivets instead of screws.

New Radio!!

I finally got my new ham radio working.:mrgreen: It and all it's accessories are mounted on a piece of 1/4" Plexiglas. This allows me to properly mount & secure everything, while still making it all easily removable from the truck when I go home. The Plexiglas mounts on 6 studs I installed in the truck.

Now I have to learn how to use it.

Time flies

Ever since he was in diapers Luke has been my little buddy. Kinda like The Skipper & Gilligan. He used to fall asleep riding around on my shoulders at church. We don't talk too often now, as he's off in college up in Portland. I found out today that he's getting married!
:mrgreen::mrgreen:8)8):mrgreen::mrgreen:
The kid I used to buy ice cream has grown into a man to be proud of.

Wow, time flies...

Luke was the ringbearer at my wedding:
